Hi friends,
This is just a quick note to say happy Independent Bookstore Day! Indies all over the country are having sales and fun activities this weekend, so it’s a great day to stop in and support your neighborhood bookstore.
And if you can’t make it in person, Bookshop is doing free shipping all weekend! If you're not familiar with them, Bookshop is an online book retailer that supports local bookstores. I keep track of all the books I write about in my newsletter on my Bookshop storefront, and if you happen to order any book at all from them using my affiliate link, I get a teeny percentage of the proceeds. All the rest goes to either a local bookstore of your choosing or a general profit pool supporting all participating indies!
I will most likely be stopping by The Center For Fiction for the second time this week, as I was just there on Thursday for a very cool evening salon with Catherine Lacey, promoting the paperback of her most recent novel, Biography of X. If you read last month’s newsletter, you’ll remember that I was deeply fascinated by the novel’s incorporation of various citations and supplementary media as a means of grounding and constructing its alternate history. I got to ask Catherine about her process for this, which she delightfully compared to a bird building a nest, collecting tidbits and ideas from both her research and casual reading as she went along.
Only at independent bookstores can you directly ask your most admired authors your most burning questions about their work and then bond over your shared first name!! Indies are truly a gift to communities everywhere, and if you needed a sign to visit yours today, consider this your blessing to go spend a ridiculous amount of money.
Okay that’s all, have fun shopping, don’t order from Shmamazon!! I’ll be back next weekend with my full reading report for April.
Until next time, happy reading!
<3 Catherine
